Purple or red cabbage has long been a part of a healthy diet, given its benefits. Among the different varieties, red cabbages are considered superior in terms of nutrients. These have a reddish-purple hue due to the presence of a flavonoid and antioxidant called anthocyanin. Purple or red cabbage is also a rich source of dietary fibre, and vitamins C and K. Consuming this vegetable may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve the immune and digestive systems.

Cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collard greens, watercress, pak choy, arugula, radishes (including horseradish), and brussels sprouts, can potentially prevent DNA damage and metastatic cancer spread, activate defenses against pathogens and pollutants, help to prevent lymphoma, boost your liver detox enzymes, target breast cancer stem cells, and reduce the risk of prostate cancer progression. The component responsible for these benefits is thought to be sulforaphane, which is formed almost exclusively in cruciferous vegetables.

Below are 10 health benefits of red or purple cabbage:

Helps fight inflammation

Boost immunity

Promote heart health

Enhance gut health

Strengthen your bones

Protect against certain cancers

Helps in weight loss

Maintain healthy skin

Improves brain health

Good for eye health

Basil is a culinary herb in the mint family. It is native to Africa and Southeast Asia, but today it’s grown worldwide. The type that’s most common in Western cooking is sweet basil, the plant that gives pesto its bright green colour and peppery flavour. But there are dozens of different types and cultivars of the plant. The most common major types of basil are:

Sweet basil, bright green and used in Italian and Mediterranean cooking (a common cultivar is called Genovese basil).

Lemon basil, a light green variety with a citrus scent.

Thai basil, a variety with a purple stem and anise flavour used in Southeast Asian cuisine (see Thai Basil Guide).

Holy basil, a variety with a spicy, musky scent also used in Southeast Asian cuisine.

What does basil taste like? Sweet basil has a fresh flavour, with a finish of black pepper and subtle anise and mint notes. It’s milder than the Thai variety, which has a strong black licorice flavour.

Where to find it? Basil is easy to grow at home, which is the cheapest and easiest way to access it. Or, you can find it fresh at most grocery stores in the produce section.

The best way to access basil? Grow it at home! All you need is a pot and a sunny ledge: no garden required. Here are some quick tips on how to grow basil:https://www.acouplecooks.com/how-to-grow-basil/

Calendula, (genus Calendula), is a small genus of 15–20 species of herbaceous plants (family Asteraceae) found in temperate regions of Eurasia as well as North Africa. The pot marigold is grown especially for ornamental purposes and is commonly found in herbal products and cosmetics. The petal-like ray flowers are edible and are likewise used in salads, tinctures and ointments.

How does it work?

Calendula flower is used to prevent muscle spasms, start menstrual periods, and reduce fever. It is also used for treating sore throat and mouth, menstrual cramps, cancer, and stomach and duodenal ulcers.

Calendula is applied to the skin to reduce pain and swelling (inflammation) and to treat poorly healing wounds and leg ulcers. It is also applied to the skin (used topically) for nosebleeds, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, inflammation of the rectum (proctitis), and inflammation of the lining of the eyelid (conjunctivitis).

Don’t confuse calendula with ornamental marigolds of the Tagetes genus, which are commonly grown in vegetable gardens.

Sunflowers – The beauty of sunflowers lies not only in their golden blossoms, but also in their leaves and stems. You may enjoy sunflower seeds, but did you know you can also eat sunflower microgreens? They are a delicious addition to any salad or sandwich. Their sweet and nutty flavour can be added to any dish for a boost of nutrients.

Read on to learn more about sunflower microgreens nutritional facts and how you can use them.

They are simply young plants harvested before they fully mature, harvested when only 2.5–7.6 centimetres tall. If you’re looking for a healthy alternative to spinach or lettuce on your salad then look no further than these. Just sprinkle some over your next meal for added flavour and texture!

Their nutritional value is one of the best parts about these tiny plants. Did you know that they contain high levels of vitamins K, A, C, B6 and folates? These nutrients help support our immune system as well as provide us with energy for our day-to-day activities. At this young stage of growth, they contain a concentrated amount of antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients. Although they are tiny, they pack a huge nutritional punch! Depending on the variety, microgreens have higher levels of nutrients—around five times more on average—than the same leaves found on the mature plant.

Cucamelons take a while to germinate and grow slowly in the first few weeks. Once the plant starts to climb it fast gains momentum and grows into a wonderful thick hedge providing you with these little gems for a full season and well into autumn. It is a perennial and will grow back the following season, developing tubers in the ground. The larger the tubers develop the faster and bigger the plant will grow back. You can germinate your seeds in seed trays filled with good compost. Keep them warm and moist and transplant them in rich organic soil when they are 5cm high. To sow directly in the soil, prepare your beds with organic compost. Cucamelons are vine crops, and will need to be grown on a trellis.

Cucamelons, also known as Melothria, mouse melons and Mexican sour gherkins look like mini watermelons but are in fact cucumbers. This amazing and delicious mini cucumber originates from Central America and Mexico.

They have an awesome fresh cucumber flavour with a hint of lime and are best eaten when crisp and light green in colour. Delicious as a snack on their own and make a great addition to salads…if they ever even make it to the kitchen! A very pretty vine with its heart shaped leaves, they make wonderful container plants grown up a trellis.
