Fruit is ready for harvest when they have reached maturity. Do not harvest immature fruit -they will not ripen. Maturity is determined by a change in external colour from dark to lighter green, grooves between the carpels will widen, & carpels wil become bigger & more rounder, especially at the base of the fruit. The fruits must be clipped from the branch to prevent damage to the soft fruit.
It is an attractive small to medium-sized tree with an open, spreading canopy that is made up of long drooping branches that can often touch the ground. The ‘African Pride’ cultivar of custard apple is known to be very productive and produces medium-sized fruits at a younger age compared to other cultivars.

Description
Custard apple – Annona Squamosa
Custard apples are delectable fruits that are quite easy to grow in South Africa. The tropical and sub-tropical conditions are ideal for fruiting, while hotter, drier conditions yield the best flowers. These trees are aptly named, as the fruit tastes exactly like they sound – creamy, vanilla-infused apples with real custard richness.
They are deciduous trees, so they shed their leaves every year. This is a tree that is constantly changing, always presenting a different, but equally lovely face. Include a few in your garden for a really pretty option that has irresistible fruits.
